OXFORD AND THE COTSWOLDS

Day 1:  Arrive Oxford

Stay at B and B in Wolvercote, 

Walk to dinner at The Trout on the Thames near Wolvercote Common

Explore the town, watch boats pass through the locks powered by hand.


Day 2:  Drive to Minster Lovell, Oxfordshire

Visit the St. Kenelm’s Church, walk on common path for lunch at Brakspear, The Lamb’s Inn

Walk back to Minster Lovell following path

Or if the Lamb’s Inn is closed, walk back to Minster Lovell to eat at the Old Swan at Minster Mill


Day 3:  Drive to Burford

Pass the Burford Grammar School, founded 1571 (still operating)

Check out the Burford House Hotel on the Main road (likely to be noisy, as it is on the main street)

Visit St. John the Baptist Church, where three Levellers were executed in 1649.

Visit the Almshouse, founded by the Earl of Warwick in 1457 and rebuilt in 1828


Day 4: Oxford--  Take the bus from Wolvercote, a ten-minute ride to Oxford, as parking is limited

Ashmolean Museum

Bodleian Library

St.Mary’s Church, climb the tower for fine view of the city

Magdelen College (pronounced “maudlin”) Buildings and gardens open to visitors

Oxford Botanic Garden and Arboretum


Evening:  Possible cultural event: outdoor theater, musical event, or film


Day 5:  Drive to Kelmscot Manor, South Cotswolds home of William Morris, founder of the Arts and Crafts Movement

Walk along the Thames plain in Lechlade

Visit historic St. Lawrence Church in Lechlade, possible tour by docent

Possible lunch at one of the tearooms in town


Drive to Fairford

Visit the Parish Church of St. Mary the Virgin, recently restored stained glass windows


Day 6:  Drive to Upper and Lower Slaughter

Take path between the villages, passing sheep along the way

Drive to Hidcote Gardens, visit the garden “rooms” and Hidcote Manor
