Montenegro

From Dubrovnik, most tours offer a day trip to Montenegro. The sun was out and the drive along the glassy Bay of Kotor was simply spectacular. The town of Kotor still has a water-filled moat along the outside of the city walls and a dizzying line of fortifications snaking up the steep mountain at Kotor’s back. Within the town walls is a delightful series of squares lined with Medieval churches and palaces. The skills of driver Loran were put to the supreme test on the some 25 hairpin turns that lead to the top of Mount Lovcen. From this vantage point, the entire stunning Bay of Kotor can be seen stretching out below you. We had lunch at a small restaurant atop the mountain. The seemingly simple ham (prsut) and cheese sandwich was to die for. No wonder – everything in it was homemade by the restauranteur and his wife. We continued on to the ex-capital city of Cetinje, where we toured the relatively recent and rather underwhelming Palace of King Nikolai I.
