Inner Mongolia, China
Flying back to
Guangzhou was most convenient from Hohhot (pronounced “who-heh-hoe-te” in
Mandarin), the capital of Inner Mongolia. It was a comfortable four-hour bus
ride from Datong along amazingly good roads. Arriving in the late afternoon, we
had just enough time to visit Da
Zhao temple. Strongly influenced by Tibetan Buddhism, it was full of
colorful halls and statues draped with multi-hued scarves. The next day we went
to the grasslands of the Mongolian plateau, where we rode horses and, seated on
the floor of a yurt, ate the tastiest roast lamb I’ve ever had. What we viewed
as merely an expedient turned out to be one of the most interesting days of our
trip!
